Cracks in the walls: should you be concerned?
Usually not. An old house moves, and many cracks simply age quietly along with it. Some, however, are the sign of ground movement — and repeated dry summers on the clay soils of the Comtat and the Alpilles have a great deal to do with it. The difference cannot be judged from the street: it has to be read.
Signs that warrant a visit
- A crack that is wider than before, or has reopened after being filled
- A stepped crack following the mortar joints
- A crack visible on both sides of the wall, inside and out
- A door or window that has started to stick
- Floor tiles that split, or a threshold or terrace pulling away from the house
What we do
We come and look, we record each crack, and we tell you what we have found. Where necessary, dated markers show whether a crack is still moving, and we arrange a soil or technical survey. We treat the cause first, then the crack — in that order.
If your commune is declared a natural disaster area
Notify your insurer without delay once the official order is published: the deadline is short and is stated in your policy. We provide a dated, photographed description and a detailed quotation that your insurer's assessor can readily follow. We do not, however, deal with your insurer on your behalf.
