Floors and paving

You look at a floor every day. Stone flagging, a calade (traditional cobbled paving), a terrace: it is a heavy item, very visible, and rarely done well when it is rushed.

How we go about it

  • The laying pattern first. Before laying, we draw it out: the direction, the joints, the cuts. That is what makes a floor look as if it has always been there.
  • What lies underneath matters as much. A well-prepared bed, and water that drains away: otherwise the slabs move, and the joints open at the first winter.
  • Re-use where possible. Old flags and setts can be lifted, cleaned and relaid: they have a patina that no new stone has.
